Dr. Bhoyrul – Bariatric Surgeon (Center of Excellence)
Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is the award-winning surgeon in charge of the bariatric surgery program at La Jolla Lap Band Program. He is a fellowship-trained specialist in laparoscopic surgery and an attending surgeon at the OrthopFedic Surgery Center of La Jolla, Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, and Alvarado Hospital in San Diego. Previously, Dr. Bhoyrul was the head of general surgery and surgical director of bariatric surgery at the Scripps Clinic. Each year since 2005, Dr. Bhoyrul has been selected by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America.” He has also been honored with San Diego’s “Top Doctor” award for 2008. Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the American College of Surgeons. He has been educated and trained at some of the world’s finest medical institutions, including undergraduate and medical school at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, a laparoscopic surgery fellowship at the department of surgery at UC San Francisco, and a residency at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Bhoyrul has contributed significant original research to the field of laparoscopic surgery, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is co-editor of Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery, one of the first textbooks in the field. As a laparoscopic surgery specialist, Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul regularly performs Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding surgery, colectomy, appendectomy, splenectomy, hernia repair, adrenalectomy, and other complex, minimally invasive surgical procedures. He continues to teach surgeons nationally, and present his work at national and international meetings.
